I am on the fence with this.

I have a house I am working on that has some pretty old and beat up cabinets. The wood itself is good quality but they look bad. I am not sure if I would remove them and refinish and paint them or just buy newer ones that are cheaper quality. There is also the option of making my own but I think that would be the most time-consuming. 

I have redone and touched up a number of cabinets and when they are done right, there is no need to replace them. If you decide to get new ones, I would find some that are used over new. Cabinets are not made as good or use as high quality of woods as they once did.
