I have somewhat of a blank canvas here. The fireplace has finished wall around it but no brick or stone. There was a large mirror I had to take down that was cracked so now it just looks so bare and ugly. 

I am trying to figure out a way to frame it to make it more appealing. Any ideas on ways to do this cheaply? 

You can make a brick frame and install a custom shelving unit above it. I have seen this done with rocks as well. It takes a while but the payoff looks stunning and it is fairly affordable.
